The Best Day Trips from Ljubljana: From Caves to Castles

Ljubljana is a gem of a city, but one of its greatest charms is its location –

Ljubljana is the perfect base for exploring Slovenia’s incredible diversity. Within an hour you could be surrounded by alpine pastures, exploring dramatic caves or standing in the shadow of a clifftop castle. Here are some of the best day trips from Ljubljana, combining must-see sights with lesser-known treasures.

1. Lake Bled: Beyond the Postcard Views

Yes, it’s famous, and yes, it’s absolutely worth it. Bled’s emerald-green lake, crowned by a tiny island and overlooked by a medieval castle, is like stepping into a fairytale. But here’s the key: come early and beat the crowds.

For a unique perspective, hire a rowing boat – don’t rush, enjoy the silence.

Afterwards, skip the overpriced restaurants and head to a local café for kremšnita, Bled’s iconic cream cake (go to Belvedere – Tito’s Pavilion). Want to avoid the crowds? Head to Lake Bohinj for a quieter, wilder atmosphere.

2. Postojna Cave: A Journey Underground

Postojna is a crowd-puller for a reason – it’s like stepping into a fantasy world. The long train ride through the huge chambers is a delight (especially if you’re coming to Slovenia with children), and the stalactites and stalagmites seem otherworldly.

Pro tip: combine this with a visit to Predjama Castle (see below), just a short drive away. And if you don’t like crowds, consider a visit to the Skocjan Caves. They are on the Unesco list.

3. Predjama Castle: A Castle Built into a Cliff

Speaking of fairytales, Predjama Castle is the very definition of dramatic. Perched on a sheer rock face, this medieval fortress looks like something out of a film (Netflix chose Predjama Castle to film the third season of The Witcher).

But its real charm lies in exploring the interior –

Narrow passageways, hidden rooms and the tales of the eccentric knight Erazem, who once lived here. The audio guide is fantastic!

Insider’s tip: Take time to explore the paths around the castle. The views from the surrounding hills are breathtaking and give you a sense of the castle’s strategic (and scenic) location.

4. Velika Planina: Alpine Pastures Like No Other

For a completely different experience, head to Velika Planina, a high plateau dotted with traditional shepherd’s huts. It’s especially magical in summer, when the huts are inhabited and you can sample fresh dairy products like homemade cheese. The cable car and short walk to the top make it accessible, and the views? Pure alpine bliss. It rivals the best in Switzerland.

Don’t forget to pack good shoes and a jacket – it’s cooler up there even in summer.

5. Rakov Škocjan: Slovenia’s Quiet Wilderness

For those who love nature and tranquillity, Rakov Škocjan is a hidden gem. This karst valley, carved out by the Rak River, is perfect for an adventurous hike. You’ll find a natural stone bridge, lush greenery, peaceful solitude and caves. It’s less touristy than other places, so you’ll often feel like you have the place to yourself.

Tip: Bring sturdy shoes. The paths are difficult.

6. Topol pri Medvodah: A Panorama Close to Home

If you’re short on time but still want to get away, Topol pri Medvodah is just 35 minutes from Ljubljana. It’s a charming little village with some of the best panoramic views of the Slovenian Alps. The hike up to St Jacob’s Church is manageable for beginners and the views from the top are well worth the effort.

For a true local experience, stop for a hearty meal at one of the two traditional gostilnas (local inns) nearby.

Gostilna Dobnikar Dobnikar Anton – Topol pri Medvodah 1, 1215 Medvode

Gostilna na Vihri Schwarzmann – Topol pri Medvodah 10, 1215 Medvode
